MPD Training Bureau
Montgomery Police Academy
We provide the City of Montgomery and other state and local agencies with professional, highly trained and effective police officers. Our goal is to furnish a disciplined environment conducive to learning and to provide professional instructions to prepare these police officers to meet the public service and public safety needs of their communities.
Responsibilities
The Training Bureau is responsible for the training of all Montgomery Police Officers and the operation of the Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy, which trains officers from other jurisdictions.
Training Bureau
The Training Bureau administrative offices are located at 740 Mildred Street, and house the Division Commander, Assistant Division Commander, Division Secretary and instructional staff. A regional Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) Academy - the Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy - is located on site and is responsible for training other state and local agency recruits in the APOSTC-required 480-hour basic course.
Firing Range & Training Facility
The Bureau also operates a Firing Range and Training Facility at 5880 Old Hayneville Road, (334) 241-2703. All MPD recruits are trained at this facility in a 560-hour course exceeding the minimum standards established by APOSTC. All firearms instruction and qualification, officer survival courses, and major seminars are held at this facility.
This location houses a 20-position handgun range and a tactical range that includes:
- rifle range
- combat courses
- explosive disposal
- training bunker
